SeattleVersus @ Gameworks 06/26/09

Abandon all hope, ye who enter here

Last Friday the SeattleVersus staff took a trip Downtown to try out new fighting games… at Gameworks. Hard to believe right? Well believe it, because now Gameworks has Blazblue, King of Fighters XII, and Tatsunoko vs Capcom on net city (Japanese) arcade cabinets. In addition to the fact that the arcade is expecting to get Tekken 6 Bloodline Rebellion very soon as well. To the average fighting game player in Seattle (one that’s familiar with the arcade scene), this is completely unheard of. One would suspect that they would have a better chance of winning the lottery or maybe even seeing a Unicorn with their very own eyes before Gameworks ever updated their archaic fighting game section. But ladies and gentlemen it has happened, albeit nearly a decade later, but better late than never. It all started last fall with Gameworks getting Street Fighter IV. A lot of people were happy with just that, figuring that expecting anything more would be silly, so this is all shocking to say the least. Especially since Gameworks is notorious for not caring about the fighting game scene.

Pictured above: Jason Cole getting mad hype for Street Fighter at 5am.

For those of you not in the know, every first and third Friday of the month Zach Robinson, aka Preppy, aka our lord and savior, hosts the preeminent get-together for the Seattle fighting game scene at his mansion/fortress Preppopolis. Entries for the SFIV double-elimination singles tournament are always near or above 40 entrants. Players can be seen finally exiting the venue no earlier than 5am Saturday, usually to go to the closest Denny’s. New slang is created every time. Don’t even get me started on the “AY” clapping.

In other words, it is SERIOUS BEASTING.

In the SFIV tournament, highlights included Peachy continuing to dominate with some of the craziest airtight execution that has ever been seen with Blanka and potential rookie of the year candidate (and recent pad-to-stick convert) Riki-Oh putting on a very strong performance with his Bison to take second. Deezo has posted the Shoryuken.com results thread here, with some additional comments.

SFIV SINGLES TOP 8 (40 Entrants):

1. James “Peachy” Siew – Safari Blanka
2. Emmanuel “Riki Oh” – Bison
3. Rodolfo “RowTron” Castro – Dhalsim
4. Jason “A-Dhalsim” Cole – Balrog, Dhalsim
5. Elias “Mechanica” – El Fuerte
5. Doug “Duggish” – Akuma
7. Trace “ICD-8″ Prewitt – Sagat
7. Kyle “kchow_xlr8″ Chow – Rufus

The second “secret project” is finally revealed! To celebrate Team Northwest going down to BEAST on fools at Evo 2009, as well as the launch of SEATTLEVERSUS, we’re going to be producing a limited run of special edition t-shirts for the local fighting scene. These are going to be the real deal, printed up at one of the best local screenprinting shops on premium-quality American Apparel 50/50 crewnecks. We’re not fuckin’ around here! Price is not locked down yet but it will most likely be around $15 (homey hookup prices!) per shirt.

Now, before we go to press, we want to assure that everyone who wants a shirt will get one, so what we need from you is to list what size you need (XS-2XL) in the comments thread of this post! That will make sure we satisfy demand AND that everyone gets the size they want.

Let’s GO.

Introducing Mickey D’s Training Sessions

Don’t let this happen to you.

“In this day and age, it’s hard to get to a high level of play without being taught.  Newer players are finding it hard to get to “the next level” in their game.  With the explosion of new players because of Street Fighter 4, I’ve been trying to do my part by making videos and helping the scene over all.  The videos were a huge hit, and before I knew it, people were adding me on Xbox Live all over the place.  Eventually it led me to start having lessons with players who wanted to strengthen their game.  I have a specific lesson plan of how I teach.  Basically we play 2 “first to 3” sessions where we talk about strengths and weaknesses.  I don’t claim to be the best player, but I DO have a passion for teaching people! ” – Mickey D

SeattleVersus is HERE

Thanks to Elliott, SeattleVersus is finally UP and RUNNING. So just what IS SeattleVersus? SeattleVersus is a place where anyone and everyone can come to see whats up with the Seattle fighting game scene. Sure, we’ve always had SRK, but now Seattle fighting gamers finally have a place to call their own.

I’ve seen a lot of players never get competitive, even when they WANT to. People want to play fighting games at a competitive level, but they don’t know where to start. A lot of people don’t like the feel of SRK, and it pushes them away from ever becoming competitive. SeattleVersus is different in the idea that it’s a place for SEATTLE fighting game players, not just fighting gamers in general.

Whether you’re old school, or new school…whether you spend hours on shoryuken.com, or if you just don’t have the time…or maybe you’ve fallen off the scene…if you want to get back in it, or just want to see how things are going…THAT is who SeattleVersus is for. Made by Team Seattle, FOR Team Seattle.

The goal is to bring people information on tournament’s or open sessions, player interviews, Northwest happenings, a bit of strategy talk here and there…More or less, a place that Seattle can call its own.

So welcome! Let’s make this Seattle’s Mecca for fighting game info.
